This year’s must-see pantomime takes the form of “Puss in Boots” at the Arts Theatre, which hits the West End following the enormously successful staging of “A Christmas Carol” in 2009. Just like last year, the show will involve the teaming up of the Arts Theatre and Tiny Tim Productions, with pantomime favourite Susie McKenna working behind the scenes alongside Steve Edis as composer.
The story of “Puss in Boots” follows the youngest child of a recently deceased miller, who is about to receive his inheritance. He is hopeful of something useful and is excited to see his older brothers receive the mill and the mule, but when he receives his own inheritance it is nothing more than a cat. The boy laments with disappointment but soon comes to realise that this is no ordinary cat, but instead a feline with the ability to talk and with grand ambitions. The cat requests a pair of boots and once he has received them it becomes clear that he wishes to make the fortunes of his master and sets out to claim his prize. “Puss in Boots” proves that just because you are a cat, it doesn’t mean you cannot weave grand stories and mischievous lies.
Susie McKenna is well known for working on various pantomimes in London, most notably the regular productions at the Hackney Empire. However, with “Puss in Boots”, she teams up with Steve Edis, the composer behind some renowned shows for the prestigious National Theatre.
The team-up is bound to deliver an exciting pantomime and the material they are working with is amongst the most popular stories of all time. It originally took the form of “Master Cat; or, Puss in Boots” by Charles Perrault, which appeared in “Histoires ou contes du temps passé” in 1697. It would become a well known French literary tale, translated into English early in the next century and eventually enjoyed by audiences around the world for years to come. Today, Puss in Boots is best known as a character in the famous animated “Shrek” films in which he is voiced by Antonio Banderas, though the work has been adapted on numerous occasions for the stage and screen.
“Puss in Boots” appears at the Arts Theatre from Thursday 18th November 2010 until Sunday 9th January 2011.
