Arthur Schnitzler’s “Liebelei” is a play that has been remembered long after the death of the famous Austrian dramatist in 1931. During his time he was a controversial writer who penned a number of well known plays, novels and short stories and in 2010 one of them returns to the stage in a updated version from the Laurence Olivier award winning playwright David Harrower.
The revamped version of the classic work is going by the title of “Sweet Nothings” at the Young Vic Theatre, with Tom Hughes and Kate Burdette in leading roles and renowned European director Luc Bondy taking on the reigns. The result is a story in which the cruelties of sex and love are exposed for all to see.
“Sweet Nothings” focuses on the character of Fritz (Hughes), a playboy bachelor who is embarking on an affair with a married woman as the play opens. But Fritz is well aware of his effect on women and alongside his friend Theodore (Jack Laskey) heads out to a party to exploit women for his every need. Meanwhile, he has set his sights on Christine, a beautiful working class girl who wants nothing more than to free herself from the world she is confined to, where her working class background has held her back and the control of men has kept her was unleashing her true potential.
Luc Bondy is a renowned European stage director who lends his hand to “Sweet Nothing” following his previous work in London in the form of Martin Crimp’s “Cruel and Tender” at the Young Vic Theatre back in 2004. His work has been seen all over Europe, from stages in Vienna to Berlin and Paris.
Meanwhile, actor Tom Hughes is a rising RADA-trained actor who has already made an appearance in various television shows and movies. He will soon be seen in the film “Cemetery Junction”, the comedy from Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, whilst he has already provided his acting talents to “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll” alongside Andy Serkis. His television credits include “Casualty 1909”, “Tortoise” and “Trinity”.
