It is a show with humble origins that has enjoyed a long and unprecedented life around the world, devised by a Laurence Olivier Award-winning choreographer and reaching an international audience at the opening ceremony of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. It can only be “Tap Dogs” – a macho tap dancing show that celebrates the steel making communities of the world, by combining the hard working nature of this industry with the talent and determination of tap dancing.
It is the brainchild of Dein Perry, an Australian dancer and choreographer from Newcastle, Australia, who decided on the idea after starring in “42nd Street” in Sydney and applying for a Government grant to realise his dream. Employing the talents of designer/director Nigel Triffitt and the musical composition of Andrew Wilkie, he emerged with “Tap Dogs”, which premiered at the Sydney Theatre Festival in January 1995.
From there it was also seen at the 1995 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre in 2003 and on Broadway, in Italy and across Australia. It has earned Perry two Laurence Olivier Awards and brought his vision to audiences across the globe. Its success has been unprecedented.
“Tap Dogs” is the fusion of the construction industry with the world of tap dancing. It features talented dancers taking to the stage wearing the garments of the industry and presenting a spectacular show on what appears to be a construction site, complete with girders, scaffolding, ropes and ladders, plus anything else we might associate with the scene. It is no wonder it has earned itself the title of one of the most macho dance shows around and is certain to be a popular destination for those looking for a passionate evening of dance in the West End.
The show began with six men taking to the stage in Sydney, but since then it has grown into a worldwide juggernaut that should not be missed when it arrives in the capital once again. The show can boast that it has been seen by more than 3 billion people when the worldwide audience for the 2000 Olympics is factored into it, and that is something that few shows can lay claim to.
