Early in 2009, Simon Evans presented a new production of “Madness in Valencia” at the White Bear Fringe venue in London. The show was translated by David Johnson and featured Kathryn Beaumont in a lead role, whilst the Black and White Rainbow production team worked behind the scenes.
Now, in 2010, the show returns and this time it appears at the Trafalgar Studios 2 with the same creative team at the helm. It is likely to be a popular production of a classic piece of Spanish Golden Century Baroque literature and is set to open its door in February.
The original version of “Madness in Valencia” was penned between 1590 and 1595 with Félix Lope de Vega y Carpio as the writer. It was a play that defined by the Spanish Golden Age and came from a playwright who is said to have been the best of the era in which he wrote. This is easy to see as Lope de Vega penned 3 novels, 4 novellas, 9 epic poems, 1,800 plays and 3,000 sonnets during his time, which in an impressive career of work even by today’s standards.
Amongst them was the story of two Spaniards fleeing from their fates and finding refuge in Valencia’s lunatic asylum, where they are forced to interact with fools and physicians. One of them is Floriano who has been fleeing from the law as a battle between rivals led to him realising he had killed the Prince. Meanwhile, Erifila is on the run to escape an unwanted arranged marriage that she had gotten herself embroiled in. When they land in the lunatic asylum they soon realise that they are going to be victims of whatever is thrown their way, with the female inmates showering Floriano with unwanted attention and Erifila suffering the same fate from the male inmates.
But as the play progresses, a bond that has been defined by circumstance may soon turn into a new romance.
Kathryn Beaumont appears in the production having appeared at the White Bear during its original run. The rest of the cast includes William Belchambers alongside James Canvin, Jonathan Christie, Andrew David, David Frias-Robles, Laurence Fuller, Alicia Grace Turrell, David Wade, Tom Watt and Elizabeth Webster. Meanwhile, Kate Matthews, Jonas Roebuck and Tom White make up some of the behind the scenes talent.
“Madness in Valencia” appears at the Trafalgar Studios 2 from Thursday 11th February 2010 (previews from Tuesday 9th February 2010) until Saturday 6th March 2010.
