For many years, fans of Agatha Christie have flocked to St Martin’s Theatre in London to witness the blockbuster production “The Mousetrap” as it continues its strong run. It means that the city is already familiar with the work of the famous author, as the play tells the classic murder mystery story brilliantly.
This Christmas season, audiences will be treated to another Agatha Christie classic as it opens at the Trafalgar Studios – proving to the producers of the past that the show is more than ready to brave the crowds of the tough West End. Back in the 1950s, it was felt that the show could not survive against other plays and instead it premiered at the Theatre Royal Bath, enjoying a brief run where attendance was high and word of mouth spread fast.
Audiences might have been taken aback with “A Daughter’s A Daughter” because it offers a more personal tale than Christie’s other works. Instead of the murder mystery scenario that fans are used to, it provides people with a look at the struggle between mother and daughter in a period just after the Second World War.
The story of “A Daughter’s A Daughter” focuses on Ann and Sarah, with Ann already engaged to a new fiancé before her daughter has even returned from the war. However, Sarah is opposed to the marriage and feels that her mother, rather than settling back in to married life, should be living life to the hilt. It is not the lifestyle that Sarah wishes for herself though and she soon sows the seeds of resentment by announcing her desire to marry the man with whom she is involved, feeling it will please her mother to inform her of her engagement. “A Daughter’s A Daughter” portrays the household as a fractured entity, in which family dysfunction gives way to jealousy and confusion with the relationship between mother and daughter tearing itself apart.
To bring the roles to life, the producers of the show have employed the talents of Jenny Seagrove alongside Tracey Childs, Simon Dutton, Honeysuckle Weeks and Ann Wenn. Seagrove will be bringing a wealth of experience to the role having appeared in productions such as “Absurd Person Singular” at the Garrick Theatre (2007) and “Brief Encounter” at the Lyric Theatre (2000), with television appearances in the likes of “Moonlighting” and “Judge John Deed”.
“A Daughter’s A Daughter” makes its appearance at the Trafalgar Studio 1 from Tuesday 15th December 2009 (previews from Monday 14th December 2009) and continues to Saturday 9th January 2010.
