Synopsis

Audiences will be able to experience classic songs with a twist this winter as Camille O’Sullivan brings her show “The Dark Angel” to the Apollo Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue.

The French-Irish singer and entertainer will be taking to the stage to showcase new covers of classic songs, including hits from David Bowie, Jacques Brel, Nick Cave and Tom Waits, giving the numbers her own theatrical and vocal style that have made her name. The show combines storytelling and singing.

A well known voice in the world of music, O’Sullivan has appeared on stages all over the world, relying on emotive power and acting style to amplify her voice, propelled by what she called ‘light and shade’. It is safe to say that her singing voice is instantly recognisable when her songs are heard, which are usually dramatic covers of Dillie Deane, Kurt Weill and the mentioned Bowie, Brel, Cave and Waits. On the stage of the Apollo she will be joined by international musicians, who will truly bring the show to life, providing perfect backing to the signature vocals.

O’Sullivan has enjoyed monumental success during her career, especially considering she is untrained in the world of music. But it is her voice, as well as controversial decisions that have kept her head above the water. Even her fans have been shocked at some of her choices, with a switch from the likes of Edith Piaf and Nina Simone earlier in her career taking people off guard.

Though she rejects the idea of a burlesque element to her shows, she has been credited as one of the people responsible for the art form’s resurgence in the UK alongside Dita von Teese. She has appeared in various cabaret shows over the years, including her own tour “Fille du Cirque”, though she has also appeared in various theatrical productions on Broadway and beyond, including “La Clique” (known as “Absinthe” on the other side of the Atlantic) and “Sweeney Todd”. She has also briefly worked in the world of film, with an appearance in the Dame Judi Dench movie “Mrs Henderson Presents”.

With appearances on stages all over the world, from New York to Dublin and from Glastonbury to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Camille O’Sullivan is a performer with a unique presence.

“Camille The Dark Angel” is at the Apollo Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue starting Monday 7th December 2009 until Saturday 16th January 2010.
