Synopsis

Eric Morecambe’s true calling was the stage and it is on stage where he will be best remembered, particularly in this new show appearing at the Duchess Theatre this Christmas.

The brain child of writer Tim Whitnall and performer Bob Golding, “Morecambe” promises to be a compelling celebration of the late comedian, charting his rise from a teenager to the star he would eventually become.

In August 2009 the show was seen at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe where it won rave reviews and praise from audiences, who were particularly impressed with Golding’s portrayal of Morecambe, mastering his mannerisms and nuances that truly gave life to his incarnation.

When it arrives at the Duchess, the show will be doing so at a perfect time of year, running over the Christmas months and into the New Year. It was during Christmas that Morecambe & Wise’s shows would truly find their place, managing to bring families together on the day itself and amassing tens of millions of viewers. It is a feat that is unlikely to be challenged by any comedy duo for some time, with “The Morecambe & Wise Christmas Specials” featuring celebrity special guests and plenty of laughs.

Morecambe was born John Eric Bartholomew in the seaside resort of Morecambe at the bottom edge of the lake district nestled between Morecambe Bay and the city of Lancaster. To honour his upbringing he took on the stage name Eric Morecambe when he became a performer at an early age, featuring in groups that would eventually lead to his historical meeting with Ernie Wise, forming a partnership that would change the comedy landscape.

In the play “Morecambe”, Whitnall will present a story inspired by the real life transition of Morecambe from teenager to a star, featuring many of his famous routines and sketches along the way. Framing the proceedings is the moment in 1984 when the country learned of his death – a moment in which a generation of comedy passed on.

Whitnall is a well known British writer, actor and musician, who has performed for various children’s television shows and appeared in various West End productions. His television work encompasses the likes of “Teletubbies” (in the role of the narrator), “Mike And Angelo” and “Roary The Racing Car”, whilst his stage work has included the likes of “Grease” and “The Rocky Horror Show”. As well “Morecambe” he has penned the likes of “The Sociable Plover”, which was later adapted into a movie.

“Morecambe” appears at the Duchess Theatre from Thursday 10th December 2009 (previews from Tuesday 8th December 2009) to Sunday 17th January 2010.
