Various popular London shows are making the transition to the West End in the New Year, with the Royal Court Theatre’s August 2009 success story “Jerusalem” acting as one of them, landing on the stage of the Apollo Theatre in February.
Jez Butterworth’s play managed to impress many people during its original run, with a stellar cast of stage and screen talent showcasing an original and unique story of an infamous man in a local community and all of the people who want a piece of him. Amongst the stars were Mackenzie Crook (“The Office”, “Pirates of the Caribbean”), Mark Rylance and Jessica Barden (“Coronation Street”).
They make the transition with the rest of the creative team in the New Year alongside a cast that includes Barry Sloane, Harvey Robinson, Greg Burridge, Lewis Coppen, Alan David, Aimee-Ffion Edwards, Lenny Harvey, Gerard Horan, Danny Kirrane, Charlotte Mills, Lucy Montgomery, Sarah Moyle, Dan Poole and Tom Brooke.
It means that one of 2009’s must see shows will now be one of the signature productions of 2010. It concerns the story of Johnny Byron (Rylance), a local man who is wanted in all corners of the community. It is St George’s Day, but it is only his children who want him to take them to the local county fair in celebration. Around the rest of the town, the plans of others are slightly more negative. The local police want Johnny because he is seen as a modern day Pied Piper who should really be behind bars; the local council wants him because they wish to evict him from his home; his friends are looking for him to pump him full of the usual cocktail of booze and drugs, whilst Troy Whitworth wants him so that he can give him a good beating.
Whilst Mark Rylance has made a career on the stage in productions such as “True West” at the Donmar Warehouse and “Life x3” at the Donmar Warehouse, his co-star Mackenzie Crook is best known as Gareth in the hit sitcom “The Office”. Crook’s other credits include a recurring role in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies and London productions such as “The Seagull” at the Royal Court Theatre. Meanwhile, former “Coronation Street” star Jessica Barden (who played Kayleigh Morton) has also appeared in the likes of “The Chase”, “Mrs Ratcliffe’s Revolution” and “My Parents Are Aliens”.
“Jerusalem” appears at the Apollo Theatre in London’s West End from Wednesday 10th February 2010 (previews from Thursday 28th January 2010) until Saturday 24th April 1010.
