Synopsis

The Garrick Theatre in London’s West End welcomes Douglas Carter Beane’s “The Little Dog Laughed” in the New Year, featuring a stellar cast of stage and screen talent.

The show will feature the screen actor Rupert Friend and the Laurence Olivier Award winning Tamsin Greig, who will both be supported by “Quantum of Solace” star Gemma Arterton and “Robin Hood” actor Harry Lloyd, making it a highly anticipated production.

In it, we are introduced to the secret world of Hollywood, a place where image is everything and maintaining that image is difficult. We meet Mitchell (Friend), a heartthrob of the movies, who is still in the closet about his sexuality; a secret that his agent Diane (Greig) wants to keep hidden through fear of it hurting both of their careers. So whilst the general public is none the wiser, things get further complicated when Mitchell begins to pine after a rent boy (Lloyd), entrapping himself in a love triangle that also involves the boy’s girlfriend (Arterton).

“The Little Dog Laughed” started out life as an off-Broadway production, landing on the stage in 2006 before finding its way to Broadway and receiving a nomination for a prestigious Tony Award (Best New Play). When the show appears at the Garrick Theatre, it will be its premiere in the West End.

The actors appearing in the production should be recognisable to many audiences, as they all have television and film work to their names amongst their stage appearances. Rupert Friend has appeared in many movies such as “The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas” (2008) and “The Young Victoria” (2009), whilst his debut in “The Libertine” (2004) won him a Satellite Award 2005.

Greig won a Laurence Olivier Award for her appearance in “Much Ado About Nothing” in 2007, whilst she has appeared in television shows such as “Black Books” and “Green Wing” amongst her frequent appearances at the National Theatre.

Gemma Arterton on the other hand is a rising star, particularly well known for appearing in “Tess of the D’Urberbilles” and movies like “Quantum of Solace” (2008), “St Trinian’s” (2007) and “The Boat That Rocked” (2009), whilst she will also be seen in two blockbuster movies in 2010. For the stage she has appeared in “Love’s Labour’s Lost” at the Globe Theatre.

Finally, Harry Lloyd, whilst regularly playing Will Scarlett in the recent BBC drama “Robin Hood”, has also been in stage shows such as “Ghosts” at the Arcola Theatre, “The Sea” at the Theatre Royal Haymarket” and “Bash” at the Trafalgar Studios.

“The Little Dog Laughed” is at the Garrick Theatre from Wednesday 20th January 2010 to Saturday 10th April 2010.
