What can really be said about Wladziu Valentino Liberace, otherwise known as simply Liberace? The pianist was one of the most flamboyant men in show business, with fans worldwide and a salary that put him above even The Beatles and Elvis Presley when they were at the heights of their fame.
Though he was well known as an American pianist and entertainer, Liberace also had routes in both Poland and Italy and would regularly be seen onstage accompanied by outrageous costumes and clothing, with backdrops that defy the imagination. As well as performing live he was also well known for appearing in movies like “The Loved One”, as well as television programmes such as “The Liberace Show”, “Batman” and a final appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 1986. He died in February 1987 at his home in Palm Springs, from an ongoing illness.
“Liberace Live From Heaven” picks up the story from his death, with pianist Bobby Crush taking on the role of the entertainer. We join him as he arrives at the Pearly Gates, where he is met by none other than Saint Peter, who must decide whether or not he can pass through the gates to heaven. Will he and the angels allow him to pass? If they do not he will be doomed to spend an eternity in hell, so it seems that the only option is for Liberace to give the ultimate performance of his eternal life so that he does not have to face horrifying consequences.
Bobby Crush, like Liberace, is a well known pianist who has appeared on various television shows and in many stage shows. His involvement ensures that audiences can expect an evening of camp entertainment, with a visual and audio extravaganza that would have made the man proud. Crush’s credits include the ITV game show “Sounds Like Music” and the talent show fronted by Hughie Green “Opportunity Knocks”. For the stage he has been seen in the likes of “The Rocky Horror Show” on tour in 1986 whilst he is also well known for penning the tune “Orville’s Song (I Wish I Could Fly)” for Keith Harris and Orville in the 1980s.
The show, which appears in the 65-seat basement theatre of London’s Leicester Square Theatre, will be directed by Julian Woolford.
