A brand new production of “Annie Get Your Gun” will be delighting audiences in the West End from October at the Young Vic with Jane Horrocks in a starring role and supporting performances from the likes of Julian Ovenen, Buffy Davis, Eric MacLennan, John Marquez and Liza Sadovy.
The famous musical comes from the minds of Irving Berlin (lyrics), plus Herbert and Dorothy Fields and tells the fictionalised story of Annie Oakley, a sharpshooting Ohio woman who lived alongside her husband Frank Butler.
The stage show introduces Butler (Julian Ovenden) as a man celebrated as the best sharpshooter in the West. He spends his time as part of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show where he is idolised as a heart throb and observed as he takes on even the most dangerous of challenges.
But he is about to meet his match in an unlikely form. Enter Annie Oakly (Horrocks), a rough and ready girl who soon gets his heart racing. But Butler is not one to lose in any kind of competition, so it remains to be seen how romance will ever blossom between two of the sharpest shooters in the Wild West.
Jane Horrocks is a celebrated actress and singer who has many accolades to her name, including a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for her performance in “The Rise And Fall Of Little Voice” (1992) and an honorary degree from Lancaster University. Her role as Laura in the iconic West End show was penned specifically for her with her then-boyfriend Sam Mendes (“American Beauty”, “Jarhead”, “Away We Go”) taking the reins of director. She went on to reprise her role in the story when it found its way to the screen in 1998’s “Little Voice”, which also starred Michael Caine and Ewan McGregor. Her other stage credits include “Sweet Panic” which found its way to the stage in 2003, as well as “Cabaret” at the Donmar Warehouse in 1994, whilst she has also been seen in 2009 in “Aunt Dan And Lemon” at the Royal Court Theatre. She is well known for playing the role of Bubbles in the hit sitcom “Absolutely Fabulous”, though she is particularly noted for her signature voice, which she has lent to animated movies such as “Chicken Run” (2000) opposite Mel Gibson and “Christmas Carol: The Movie” (2000) opposite Nicolas Cage.
“Annie Get Your Gun” is a welcome addition to the West End, having been seen by audiences since its Broadway (and world) premiere in 1946 and its London run the following year at the London Coliseum. A range of big names have taken on its signature roles over the years and it is likely to be a popular draw.
“Annie Get Your Gun” is at the Young Vic from Saturday 3rd October 2009 to Saturday 2nd January 2010.
