Since 1962 audiences around the world have been captivated by Ken Kesey’s famous novel “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest”, which introduced us all to characters such as McMurphy, Billy Bibbit, Chief Bromden and Nurse Ratched. It became an iconic classic, spawning a stage version that attracted the likes of Gary Sinise, Kirk Douglas, Gene Wilder and Ed Ames to its story, before the movie version landed in cinemas with Jack Nicholson taking on the role of McMurphy.
In 2009 audiences will be able to experience the joys of this show once more in the form of “Bounce: Insane In The Brain”, which is an anticipated and exciting hip hop version of Ken Kesey’s classic. It is due to land on the stage of the Peacock Theatre in the Autumn, featuring music from an array of hit hip hop icons, as well as unique and imaginative set designs and choreography.
“Bounce: Insane In The Brain” takes audiences to the psychiatric hospital at the centre of the story, where a range of colourful characters inhabit its floors. Watching over them all is the tyrannical Nurse Ratched, a strict authoritarian who rules all. To rebel against this iron rule, the patients use breakdancing as a means for expressing their desire for freedom. As this goes on Nurse Ratched looks on in anger. After all, she would much prefer ballet.
The Bounce theatre company are bringing this show to the Peacock Theatre for the second time, returning due to popular demand. They are a theatre company who have been taking internet users by storm, with YouTube viewers flocking to observe the footage of them celebrating Michael Jackson in the centre of Stockholm, where their performance of “Beat It” caused quite a stir.
As well as previous productions of Bounce’s “Insane In The Brain”, the story of “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” has been seen onstage on a variety of occasions, most notably on New York’s Broadway, with a premiere dating back to 1963. Subsequent productions have appeared in 1971 as well as a well known show in 2001.
“Bounce: Insane In The Brain” makes its appearance at the Peacock Theatre on Portugal Street from Tuesday 15th September 2009, where it is running until Saturday 3rd October 2009.
