Catch Richard Briers in his last ever stage role this Autumn with a new production of “Endgame” appearing at the Duchess Theatre from September.
The famous play by Samuel Beckett is brought back to life by the acclaimed theatre company Complicité, with Briers taking on the role of Hamm, the blind man at the centre of the story of two dependents and their struggle of a life.
As well as appearing in the long running sitcom “The Good Life”, the show for which he is possibly best known, Richard Briers has also appeared in a variety of other shows over the years, including his debut onscreen in “Marriage Lines”, as well as “Monarch of the Glen” and “Ever Decreasing Circles”. But onstage, he has also carved himself a successful career with a range of productions, including the most recent “Bedroom Farces” at the Aldwych Theatre in 2002, as well as “The Chairs” which first saw him unite with Complicité at the Duke Of York’s Theatre.
In the play, Hamm lives with his servant Clov and the pair are dependent on each other in their surroundings, which are less than satisfactory for either of them. Whereas Hamm cannot stand up due to his condition, Clov cannot sit down due to his demands and the pair argue and fight for some time leading to the events of the play. Outside of the two are Hamm’s parents, who are both living their lives legless following a biking accident.
The show also stars Adrian Scarborough as Clov, who has spent a lot of time onstage himself, appearing in productions such as “Vassa” at the Almeida Theatre, “To The Green Fields Beyond” at the Donmar Warehouse and “The Mandate”, “Time and the Conways” and “Henry IV Part I and II” at the National Theatre.
Then there is Miriam Margolyes as Nell, who has appeared in a wide range of movies, making her a recognised face. Amongst her credits are “How To Lose Friends And Alienate People” alongside Simon Pegg, “Romeo & Juliet” for Baz Luhrmann, “”Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets” and the television series “Blackadder”. She was also part of the original cast of the West End’s “Wicked”.
“Endgame” appears at the Duchess Theatre from Thursday 24th September 2009 (previews from Friday 18th September 2009) until Saturday 5th December 2009.
