In the mid 1990s, Jim Cartwright penned the show “The Rise And Fall Of Little Voice” to showcase the singing talents of Jane Horrocks to West End audiences. The show was directed by her then-boyfriend Sam Mendes and the result was a box office success. It later spawned a movie, “Little Voice”, which starred Horrocks alongside Michael Caine and Ewan McGregor, cementing its place as a landmark story.
Now the story returns to the stage, this time with Diane Vickers in the starring role of Laura ‘Little Voice’. Many will remember Vickers for her success on last year’s “The X Factor”, in which she steadily climbed the ladder to be part of the final few (though the competition was eventually won by Alexandra Burke). Her stellar voice has landed her many admirers and she will soon release her debut record in 2010 after being signed to a major record label. Times are hectic for her at the moment, but she has managed to fit “The Rise And Fall Of Little Voice” into her hectic schedule, which will be running to January 2010.
Diane Vickers rise on “The X Factor” is far removed from the rise that Laura goes through in “The Rise And Fall Of Little Voice”, but her recent success makes her perfect for the role. Vickers undoubtedly wants a life at the top, but the difference is Laura is not so sure about herself. We meet her as she is living in her home in the north of England with her drunken and overly intense mother, whose overbearing personality has turned Laura into a painfully shy individual, hiding away from the world in her room, with her father’s old records to pass the time.
So she begins to sing, relaying perfect renditions of Judy Garland, Shirley Bassey and Edith Piaf to the rest of her room. That is until her mother’s new boyfriend overhears her and, using his contacts, starts her rise to the top. But this is not the life that Laura wants and pretty soon she might just be back to spending time alone...
