Synopsis

When the movie “The Shawshank Redemption” first opened in 1994, in cinemas the world over, it failed to make a large impression. Despite critical acclaim audiences did not flock to see it like we might have though. Instead, it is a film that is looked back on with fond eyes, that has built up its scores of admiration over the years since its release so that it is now regarded as one of the greatest movies of all time. Based on the novella by Stephen King “Rita Hayworth And Shawshank Redemption”, it delivered a universal message of friendship and hope, that can stay strong in the most difficult of times, meaning that it has stayed in the public consciousness ever since.

Now it arrives on stage in a new production of the famous story which first appeared at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin. It will be making its London premiere at the Wyndham’s Theatre with screen and stage actors Kevin Anderson and Reg E Cathey occupying the iconic roles once held by Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman.

It tells the story of Andy Dufresne (Anderson), a banker who is convicted of the murder of his wife and her lover and subsequently sent for his life sentence at Shawshank Prison. He regularly proclaims his innocence, but it falls on deaf ears, drowned out by the sounds of every other prisoner claiming the same thing. But Andy is different and soon enough evidence begins to emerge backing up his story. However, the actions of the malicious warden keep him behind bars and it seems that he will have to carry out his life sentence after all. So he makes a life for himself, involving himself in the world he is living in and never losing hope of one day making it out. He also meets “Red” (Cathey) and the pair become lifelong friends. His positive stance and the help from his friend ensure that he remains sane behind the walls of Shawshank.

“The Shawshank Redemption” stars Reg E Cathey as “Red”, who appears having played the role of Norman Wilson, Mayor Carcetti’s right hand man in the HBO series “The Wire”. He and Kevin Anderson have both appeared in a range of Broadway productions as well, whilst Anderson’s film credits include “Sleeping With The Enemy” (1991) and “Charlotte’s Webb” (1996).

“The Shawshank Redemption” is at the Wyndham’s Theatre from Sunday 13th September 2009 (previews from Friday 4th September 2009) to Sunday 14th February 2010.
