Synopsis

Audiences will be able to enjoy the antics of Dolly Levi this summer with “Holly, Dolly!” making a welcome appearance at the Open Air Theatre from August.

The popular musical stars Samantha Spiro in the role of Dolly, whilst direction is provided by the acclaimed Timothy Sheader, who has worked extensively at the Open Air Theatre whilst also providing work for a variety of London venues and beyond.

In “Hello, Dolly”, the title character is introduced as a matchmaking woman in New York city. Her husband is dead, but she remembers what he taught her about circulating the money of the rich, so the show follows her efforts to marry the half-a-millionaire Horace Vandergelder.

But this doesn’t mean love isn’t in the air for others, with Dolly matching up many people along the course of her journey, including Molloy with Cornelius Hackl, as well as Barnaby Tucker with Minnie Fay and Ambrose Kemper with Ermengarde.

Dolly will do anything to get her man and this will take her to a variety of locations across the city, from restaurants to hat shops and everywhere in between. During the course of the show there are also some great musical numbers, including “Put On Your Sunday Clothes”, “Ribbons Down My Back”, “Elegance”, “Before the Parade Passes By”, “So Long, Dearie” and “Hello, Dolly!”

Samantha Spiro has worked extensively at the Open Air Theatre in productions such as “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, “Macbeth” and more recently “Much Ado About Nothing”. However, she also has a host of other credits to her name, including “Cleo, Camping, Emmanuelle and Dick” at the National Theatre in which she played Barbara Windsor, and “Twelfth Night” at the Wyndham’s Theatre. For the television she has appeared in “Cold Feet” and “After You’ve Gone” whilst appearing in the movie “From Hell” (2001).

Meanwhile, her director Timothy Sheader also has an impressive CV, with productions that include “Twelfth Night” and “Gigi” at the Open Air Theatre, “Imagine This” at the New London Theatre and touring productions of “Arms And The Man” and “Annie Get Your Gun”.

“Hello, Dolly!” is at the Open Air Theatre from Monday 10th August 2009 (preview from Thursday 30th July 2009) to Saturday 12th September 2009.
