There’s an age old theory that everyone on the planet is linked to one another by six steps or less and that theory is put to the test in this brand new revival of John Guare’s classic play “Six Degrees Of Separation”. As part of the Old Vic’s 2009-2010 season, it will be landing at the London venue in January 2010 under the watch of the acclaimed director David Grindley.
“Six Degrees Of Separation” is an Olivier Award winning play that has been seen on both sides of the Atlantic and was also adapted into a Fred Schepisi directed movie that starred Donald Sutherland, Will Smith and Sir Ian McKellen in 1993. Stockard Channing also appeared after already starring in the play on Broadway.
The show is also based on a true story, concerning a streetwise young man called David Hampton, who managed to convince many residents in New York that he was the son of the screen icon Sidney Poitier. On stage, this street wise young black man manages to charm his way into the house of two art dealers in the form of the Kittredges, a wealthy white New York couple. They take him in thinking that he is the actor’s son, as well as a college friend of their children, but is he really? The show has been regularly celebrated as a funny classic, with great writing that displays moments of genuine wit and hilarity, bringing the absurd world of celebrity and fame to the table.
The play premiered in 1990 at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater, Lincoln Center under the direction of Jerry Zaks, which then landed on Broadway later in the year when it was showcased at the Vivian Beaumont Theater (sic). Its Olivier Award winning turn came three years later when it appeared at the Royal Court Theatre in London, landing the prize for the Best New Play.
This production will be an interesting take on a classic from renowned director David Grindley, who has scored many successful Broadway productions in recent years, including “The Philanthropist”, “Pygmalion” and “The American Plan”.
