“Twelfth Night” makes a welcome appearance in the West End in November following its anticipated run at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. It has a lot going for it; not only is it the latest staging of one of the Bard’s classics, it is also sporting an impressive cast made up of Stephen Fry, Mark Rylance, Samuel Barnett and Johnny Flynn. So it is likely that audiences will be flocking to pick up theatre tickets when this arrives at the Apollo Theatre later in the year.
The play was penned right at the start of the 17th century with an early performance in 1602 prior to its 1623 publication in the First Folio. It is one of Shakespeare’s most famous pieces and it contains the popular theme of mistaken identity that is prevalent in much of his work. On this occasion this theme is kick-started by shipwrecking of Viola and her brother Sebastian, who she now fears dead, forcing her to make it in a man’s world by disguising herself as a boy named Cesario. After finding herself employment at the hands of the Duke of Orsino she finds herself in a confusing love triangle in what is rightly regarded as a classic comedy.
Stephen Fry is well known around the country for his work on television, though he has also made it to the big screen, the stage and to the internet via his famous Twitter page. Currently he is known for presenting the panel show “QI” though he previously appeared in the likes of “Jeeves and Wooster”, “A Bit of Fry and Laurie”, “Blackadder” and more, whilst his films have included “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” and “V for Vendetta”. Meanwhile he appeared in the West End’s “Cell Mates” and penned a recent version of “Cinderella” for the Old Vic Theatre.
Mark Rylance, on the other hand, is best known for his recent appearance in the show “Jerusalem”, which also appeared at the Apollo Theatre, though his career has also included “La Bete” at the Comedy Theatre, “Endgame” at the Duchess Theatre and movies like “Blitz” and “Anonymous”.
