The Arts Theatre is the brand new home of the ever popular musical Shout!, detailing the exploits of three young girls in 1960s London. Based on the work of the likes of Phillip George and David Lowenstein, it appears following a regional tour in 2008 and a premiere at the Jermyn Street theatre in 2001. It is billed as a musical journey that features 30 classic songs from the swinging 60s and direction from the Laurence Oliver Award nominated choreographer Bill Deamer. So by April the Arts Theatre will present a fun story filled with the songs of favourites like Lulu and Cilla Black.
Everyone remembers the 1960s. It was a decade of extreme fashions and hippies, featuring students staging protests and sit-ins against a backdrop of Beatles mania, the moon landings and the arrival of Top of the Pops. It was the last time England won the World Cup and the first time the world was introduced to Woodstock (and the only decade in which the true festival was held). Shout! follows the exploits of three young women who embark on a world of fun and mayhem by travelling to London. Our story takes place in a hair dressing salon where all kinds of swinging mayhem are about to take place in the form of sexual liberation and uncontrolled fun. Hi De Hi star Su Pollard plays the girls’ mentor in the form of Vonnie.
During the course of the play some memorable characters will sing and swing to songs like “Downtown”, “I Only Wanna Be With You”, “Son Of A Preacher Man”, “To Sir With Love”, “I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself”, “These Boots Are Made For Walking”, “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me” and who could forget the classic “Shout!”. As well as hits by Cilla Black and Lulu the show also features the sounds of Dusty Springfield and Petula Clark.
Director Bill Deamer brings his skills to the Arts Theatre following an extensive background as a director and choreographer, reaching a career high in 2007 when he was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for The Boy Friend which appeared at the Open Air Theatre. At the same venue, his work was also seen in the form of Lady Be Good. He directs Shout! from an adaptation from Julie Balloo.
Shout! is at the Arts Theatre from Friday 17th April 2009 to Sunday 28th June 2009.
