Johnnie Mortimer, Brian Cooke and Michael Kingsbury combine talents to bring Kenneth Williams and company back to the public’s hearts in Stop Messing About at the Leicester Square Theatre. Robin Sebastian and Emma Atkins bring both Kenneth Williams and Joan Sims back to life, with Nigel Harrison taking on the role of Hugh Paddick.
It’s a great cast that has been winning the production much praise, with the Daily Telegraph applauding Robin Sebastian’s Kenneth Williams, “the hairs stand up on the back of your neck…he’s so good, it’s as though he was born to play the much missed wag”.
Stop Messing About drops us right into a live BBC recording in which the stars of the past are brought back together. There are laughs a plenty and good clean humour all round from an era when swearing was unheard in the media. With the stars of the past back on stage, you can be guaranteed to be smiling all of the way through. There are top sketches, such as the character of Sir Inigo Parchmutter and a lady attempting to pass her driving test. All of this as well as songs in the form of “The Ballad of Baldy O’Toole”. This is a hugely inventive show brought to you by top writing talents John Mortimer and Brian Cooke, who were responsible for many loved TV shows, including some of the classics like Man About The House and Robin’s Nest. However, they also wrote material for some of the nation’s most adored comics, from Tommy Cooper to Ronnie Barker and from Marty Feldman to Frankie Howerd.
To make this show more authentic, it also features the voice work of Charles Armstrong, who voices the announcer Douglas Smith, which will ensure that the audience truly feels like they have taken a real trip down memory lane. And the press agrees, with the Mail on Sunday saying “Charles Armstrong lovingly brings to life the honey voiced BBC announcer Douglas Smith”.
Stop Messing About brings Robin Sebastian to the stage having already played in productions such as Mel Brooks’ The Producers, which toured the country in 2007. Williams’ Carry On co star Joan Smith takes the form of Emma Atkins, who has appeared in Emmerdale, Dalziel and Pascoe, Doctors and Casualty. She has also starred in a touring production of The Play What I Wrote.
