Audiences at the Garrick Theatre will soon be able to sit in awe as they enjoy A Little Night Music. Stephen Sondheim’s classic musical, set in turn of the century Sweden, finds itself at this great London theatre in 2009. Along with a cast that includes Alexander Hanson, Maureen Lipman and Hannah Waddingham and some great songs that includes the famous “Send In The Clowns”, this is sure to be a worthwhile experience.
Maureen Lipman appears as Madame Armfeldt in the production, following years of work as an actress and comedienne. She has had many examples of West End success and acclaim with a career made up of the likes of “Glorous!” at the Duchess Theatre in 2005, “The Sisters Rosenwig” at the Old Vic in 1994 as well as “Peggy For You” at the Comedy Theatre in 2000. She has also found critical and audience acclaim from her work onscreen, after appearing in the likes of Coronation Street and Doctor Who.
Sir Trevor Nun’s cast for his production, which is his first adaptation of material written by Stephen Sondheim, also consists of Alexander Hanson (Fredrik Egerman), Hannah Waddingham (Desiree Armfeldt), Kelly Price (Countess Charlotte Malcolm), John Addison, Laura Armstrong, Lynden Edwards, Holly Hallam, Kaisa Hammarlund, Grace Link, Alistair Robins, Nicola Sloane and Gabriel Vick. It will bring new life to the original story by Ingmar Bergman and introduce the work of Stephen Sondheim to a new generation.
A Little Night Music takes us away from London and takes us to turn of the century Sweden. It is here that we are introduced to four linked couples who, during a particular weekend, are involved in romantic affairs and some inner turmoils. During the course of the show we will see how this one weekend affects them. Along with the famous song “Send In The Clowns”, the show is also full of some other classic tunes in the forms of “Night Waltz”, “You Must Meet My Wife”, “Every Day a Little Death”, “Weekend in the Country” and “Glamorous Life”. With a compelling journey across one weekend and music set entirely to waltz, it is a story that has found many admirers since it was penned in the 1970s (after being inspired by the 1955 Ingmar Bergman film Smiles of a Summer Night).
A Little Night Music will appear at the Garrick Theatre from Tuesday 7th April 2009 (previews from 28th March 2009) and is currently booking to Saturday 25th July 2009.
