Synopsis

When we think of Spring Awakening, some of us will be forgiven for thinking of Frank Wedekind’s play about sexual awakening within a group of teenagers. However, the current production under this title, which will be appearing at the Novello Theatre in March, is a rock musical that takes Wedekind’s original premise and turns it into a song filled odyssey that deals with these controversial and relevant themes in a whole new way. This is s great show for teenagers to introduce themselves to the joys of the West End, with themes that deal with growing up as well as a new pricing system to aide in their effort to see it.

Frank Wedekind’s contentious play, set in the nineteenth century, has been updated for a new audience. Keeping the period setting, the producers of this new show manage to tackle the issue of teenage awakening with new flare as rock music fills the stage. This manages to bring out the heartfelt emotions of these troubled teens as they deal with this turmoil, but at the same time it is apt that rock music is what is chosen to express this. Just as the characters in the musical deal with parental oppression concerning the sexual angst they are going through, teenagers of today have to deal with similar issues regarding listening to rock music in the first place. It is a decision the makers have taken which an audience is sure to enjoy.

The show premiered in 2009 at the Lyric Hammersmith, where it continues until March. From then on you will be able to enjoy the highs and lows of Spring Awakening at London’s Novello Theatre. There you can witness this great show with a wonderful cast that includes Aneurin Barnard, Iwan Rheon and Charlotte Wakefield as the teenagers of the piece, and Richard Cordery and Sian Thomas as the adults. The creative team behind this production are the talents of Duncan Sheik and Steven Slater, ensuring that an evening at the Tony Award winning phenomenon will be one to remember.

Spring Awakening is at the Novello Theatre from Saturday 21st March 2009 and will stay there until Saturday 31st October 2009.
