Sadler’s Wells will be bringing back the music of Richard Rodgers in July when Adam Cooper’s Shall We Dance is brought to the stage. The show is set to the songs of the famous Richard Rodgers, best known perhaps as the Rodgers side of Rodgers and Hammerstein. With a full orchestra showcasing this amazing show, Adam Cooper’s first show at Sadler’s Well since 2005 is sure to be a great hit for all members of the family. The Times says of Adam Cooper, Shall We Dance: “If celebrity is measured in watts, Adam Cooper’s reaches triple figures”.
Shall We Dance looks at one man and how his life’s quest is to find true love amongst ballrooms and auditoriums. This stage event chronicles the exploits of this man as we embark on a journey through the Wild West, the Orient and others through the use of great dance numbers from Russian folk dance, New York jazz, Viennese ballroom and tap. Award winning dancer and choreographer Adam Cooper brings this brilliant and imaginative show to Sadler’s Well, the venue that last housed his talents in 2005’s Liaisons Dangereuses.
Richard Rodgers was born in New York in 1902 and went on to write over 900 songs throughout his life. He was also responsible for 40 Broadway musicals as well as music for the screen in films and television. He is notable for being on of few people who have won an Oscar, a Grammy, a Tony Award, a Pulitzer Prize and an Emmy. Perhaps he is best known for his work collaborating with both Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein II. With Hart he was responsible for the music in shows such as A Connecticut Yankee (1927), Simple Simon (1930), America's Sweetheart (1931), Love Me Tonight (1932) and Jumbo (1935) amongst others. With Hammerstein II he provided the music for songs in musicals like Oklahoma! (1943), Carousel (1945), State Fair (film - 1945), The King and I (1951), Me and Juliet (1953), Cinderella (1957) and The Sound of Music (1959) plus many more. He also produced music for other shows outside of his Hart and Hammerstein II partnerships.
Shall We Dance is directed by Richard Balcombe of Cats and Phantom of the Opera, designed by Paul Farnsworth with lighting design by Paul Pyant.
