Synopsis

As the title might suggest, this new show comes straight from Cuba and will give punters the chance to experience a glimpse of Cuban culture with lots of spectacle, energy and beats. After a successful run in 2009 at the Peacock Theatre, the critically acclaimed show returns for an anticipated appearance in February. It means that its anticipated arrival will mark four consecutive years that the show has appeared.

Havana Rakatan is split into two parts to show us the way Cuban way of life has progressed. In part one, we are introduced to the charismatic and street wise stars of the show who are going to take us on this journey of Cuba. We are then shown the roots of the country and how Spanish culture along with African spiritual beliefs came together to lay the foundations of a thriving culture. As a result we will witness a showcasing of Afro-Haitian rhythms, flamenco and Yoruba, celebrating the country in classic style. Then we will move on to part two when we travel forward in time to the modern day, witnessing great dance styling from the likes of salsa, cha-cha-cha, the mambo and the rumba against the backdrop of contemporary urban and rural Cuba. All of these dances are presented to the audience by sexy dancers, who are unrivalled in their skills, with footwork to envy mixed with a sense of fun.

The show will seem so fast that there will never be a dull moment, with lightning fast costume changes meaning that the energy remains on top form and the performers will remain at the top of their game. It also features fantastic music from the famous seven piece Cuban band Turquino who will perform live numbers to the spectacles on display. As a result the dance routines of the bolero and the salsa will be given a boost by the great music that has the distinctive sounds of Cuba.

All of this is brought to you by the great Ballet Rakatan, Nilda Guerra’s acclaimed dance company which includes 14 members who will take you on a delightful evening of high quality entertainment.

Havana Rakatan is at the Peacock Theatre from 4th Feb 2010 and continues until 6th March 2010.
