Synopsis

Expect psychological mind games and sexual tension at the Arts Theatre this February as a stage version of the Gardner McKay novel Toyer opens on a London stage. It appears under the direction of William Schouler and stars Al Weaver and Alice Krige, two stage and screen actors who have accumulated a back catalogue of critical acclaim.

Toyer tells a chilling story as a serial killer known as the ‘Toyer’ is on the loose. People have a reason to be scared of him, for his style is to sadistically lobotomise his female victims. We join Psychiatrist Maude as she discovers a strange man at the door to her apartment late one night. She is aware that this visitor could be completely innocent, but there is a chance that she could be face to face with the infamous ‘Toyer’. She must keep her wits about her and stay one step ahead of the man as they embark on a psychological battle, tied together with mind games and sexual tensions. One slip up and a horrible fate could await her. Whether you are a fan of the genre or in need of a good night out, Toyer is certain to be an interesting and compelling experience.

The play is based on the novel by Gardner McKay, the American author who also had a long career as a Hollywood heartthrob – working as an actor and artist as well. He starred in the American television series Adventures In Paradise, playing the role of Adam Troy and subsequently becoming a huge star in the 1950s and 1960s. The book Toyer was released in 1998, three years before he died in November 2001.

The characters of Maude and the supposed ‘Toyer’ will be brought to life by Al Weaver and Alice Krige. Weaver has appeared in numerous successful productions including the 2004 production of Hamlet at the Old Vic (winning praise from critics and even politician Michael Portillo) and Coram at the Olivier National Theatre (2006). He has also appeared in The Devil’s Whore for Channel 4, The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, the movie adaptation of the game Doom as well as the movie Marie Antoinette.

Meanwhile Krige was the Borg Queen in Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Voyager (final episode). She has also appeared in the movies The Contract (2006) and Chariots Of Fire (1981).

So make sure you catch this thrilling production on the London stage. Toyer is at the Arts Theatre from Wednesday 25th February 2009 (previews from Monday 16th February 2009), currently booking until Saturday 11th April 2009.
