Synopsis

The great musical Hit Me! The Life And Rymes Of Ian Dury is making its appearance at the Leicester Square theatre this year. This critically acclaimed look at the famous musician from ‘Ian Dury and The Blockheads’ is hoping to repeat the great success it had when it first appeared at the Courtyard Theatre in Hoxton.

According to press articles, the musical has been called “Terrific stuff” by the Financial Times and “HILARIOUS” by the Metro, adding that it is “An insight into the riotous world of sex 'n' drugs 'n' rock 'n' roll”, whilst the Herald celebrates it for “Radiating the spirit of punk”.

Jeff Merrifield’s Hit Me! The Life And Rhymes Of Ian Dury tells the story of the late singer, songwriter Ian Dury, the troubled man who was a punk and new wave icon in the 1970s and died in March 2000. On the outside Dury came across as full of life and happy, but he was masking a deeply troubled mindset, battling away at many inner demons. The musical looks at three different eras of his life, at the height of success, during great comeback and at his friend Fred’s cottage just after his death in 2000. However, this being a musical, we are treated to some live performances from his back catalogue of classics. These include “Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick”, “Reasons To Be Cheerful”, “Clever Bastards”, “What A Waste” and “Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll”.

Playing Dury is acclaimed actor Adrian Schiller, who has had great success acting on stage, in films, television and for the radio. His London stage credits include Madame Bovary: Breakfast With Emma at the Lyric Theatre in 2003 as well as The Knickers – Die Hose at the Lyric Theatre, The Hour We Knew Nothing Of Each Other at the Lyttelton National Theatre last year (2008), and many productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company, which include “The Tempest”, “The White Devil”, “Roberto Zucco”, “Henry V”, “Troilus and Cressida”, “Measure for Measure”, “Romeo & Juliet” and “As You Like It”.

Joining him as Dury’s roadie Fred 'Spider' Rowe is John Darcy who was last seen as part of Improvathon and Impro Fest 2008 at the People Show Studios. Together they will make a great team.

Hit Me! The Life And Rhymes Of Ian Dury is at the Leicester Square Theatre from Tuesday 13th January 2009 (previews from Tuesday 6th January 2009), currently booking until Sunday 15th February 2009.
