Lisa Kron’s autobiographical play will be returning to London’s West End when the Apollo Theatre becomes the home for Well in 2009. The play stars Sarah Miles and Natalie Casey in leading roles and tells the humorous story of a Jewish girl growing up in a Christian family. The show is no stranger to the West End, after experiencing a successful run at the Trafalgar Studios. It has also been successful previously on Broadway after receiving its world premiere in New York back in 2004. As well as these successful runs, it has also been nominated for an award – as the Best New Comedy in the What’s On Stage Theatregoers’ Choice Awards 2009.
Writer Lisa Kron wrote the play as an autobiographical account of a Jewish girl growing up in a Christian household and as a result feeling like an outsider, even within her own family. Her paternal family were killed during the Holocaust, where millions of Jews were murdered by the Nazis, leaving her with the Christian maternal side. The play looks at her as she grows up, looking at Kron’s experiences with illness as well as the education system and religion.
Playing Anne Kron is Sarah Miles who is well known for starring in many movies. She is an Academy Award nominated actress who made her film debut in Term Of Trial in 1962 after graduating from RADA. She also starred in The Servant (1963), Blowup (1966) and alongside Sir Laurence Olivier in Ryan’s Daughter (1970) for which she was nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards. She went on to star in the likes of The Hireling (1973), The Big Sleep (1978), Venom (1981) and Hope And Glory (1987).
Alongside Miles, Natalie Casey will portray the play’s author Lisa Kron. Casey is well known to audiences in the UK for her roles in both Hollyoaks for Channel 4 and Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps for the BBC. Also appearing are Oli Chris (of Green Wing and The Office), Zara Tempest-Walters, Jason Rowe and Maggie Service.
