Based upon Billy Wilder’s film of the same title, Sunset Boulevard opened in the West End in July 1993, with music by the theatrical genius Andrew Lloyd Webber. After a hugely successful run lasting three years, the production closed and has not returned to London in over 10 years. Therefore, tickets are in high demand as the highly acclaimed musical will return to the West End once again when it opens at the Comedy Theatre on the 15th December 2008.
Directed and co-written by Billy Wilder, Sunset Boulevard was an award-winning film noir released in 1950. Named after a boulevard of the same name, the film tells the story of Norma Desmond, a has-been movie star who used to be a household name, and her chance meeting with Joe Gillis, a struggling screenwriter. Gillis accepts a job from Desmond, as a script reader, and whilst they both have different motivations for wanting to work together (Gillis is desperate for money, whilst Desmond is desperate to retain fame once again), this chance encounter will change both of their lives forever.
It is a well known fact within the theatre industry that anything Andrew Lloyd Webber is involved in will usually be a huge hit. Lloyd Webber has composed the music for the musicals The Likes of Us (1965), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1968), Jesus Christ Superstar (1970), Evita (1976), Cats (1981), The Phantom of the Opera (1986), as well as producing the recent West End revival of The Sound of Music (2006). Andrew Lloyd Webber has brought new audiences to London theatres through his creation of a new television reality format in which lead roles in West End musicals are chosen by television audiences and celebrity judging panels. Connie Fisher was the first recipient of a role, winning the contest How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? Lee Mead won Any Dream Will Do to take the lead of Joseph in the West End revival of the show. Most recently, Jodie Prenger won the role of Nancy in Oliver! following the reality show I’d Do Anything.
Kathryn Evans will play the role of Nancy Desmond in Sunset Boulevard. Evans has worked with Lloyd Webber before, having played the title role in Evita for 18 months at the Prince Edward Theatre in London’s West End. Evans also portrayed the role of Rose in Lloyd Webber’s Aspects of Love, which went on a National Tour before appearing at the Prince Wales Theatre.
Sunset Boulevard appears at the Comedy Theatre from the 15th December 2008 until the 18th April 2009.
