The West End’s Trafalgar Studios are making way for Maria Friedman this Christmas for twenty five nights of Maria Friedman: Rearranged. The show is arriving after a successful run at the Menier Chocolate factory earlier this year (it ran there from March) and features Friedman at her best, showcasing some of her favourite show tunes and other classic songs. The Menier run was acclaimed by audiences and critics, which led to it receiving a sell out run. The show will take up the 8.30 slot with Horrid Henry - Live And Horrid filling the earlier slot of 6pm. The shows mean that the Trafalgar is full of classic productions this season, making it a great stop for theatre goers. The show runs for 90 minutes without an interval.
The sequel to Friedman’s Olivier Award winning show By Special Arrangement in 1995, Rearranged is Maria Friedman’s opportunity to perform new versions of her favourite show tunes and other classic songs, with the accompaniment of an 11 piece band, playing 50 instruments between them. Songs she will showcase include classics from artists such as Irving Berlin, Leonard Bernstein, Jerry Herman, Michel Legrand, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Randy Newman, Stephen Sondheim, Charles Strouse and Suzanne Vega. She is joined by some of the UK’s best solo artists as well as international renowned orchestrators and arrangers, including Jason Carr, David Cullen, Michael Starobin, Jeremy Sams, Jonathan Tunick and Chris Walker.
By Special Arrangement was Friedman’s first solo London show, which appeared at the Donmar Warehouse. It won her an Olivier Award before she won two more for Ragtime, as well as Passion at the Queen’s in 1996. Over the years she has won many awards. Her other West End stage credits include 2004’s Woman in White at the Palace, 2000’s The Witches of Eastwick at Drury Lane, 1998’s Chicago at the Adelphi, 1997’s Lady in the Dark at the Lyttelton and The Break of Day at the Royal Court Downstairs in 1995. Last year she reopened the Royal Festival Hall with Sweeney Todd in which she played Mrs Lovett and she has had concert seasons in New York’s Café Carlyle.
Maria Friedman: Rearranged is at the Tragalgar Studios from Thursday 4th December 2008 (Previews from Thursday 27th November 2008) to Sunday 4th January 2008.
