Latest Review: "Entertaining Mr Sloane is a terrific play from the pen of Joe Orton, but this production has a pr..."
Entertaining Mr Sloane opens at the Trafalgar Studios in January, bringing with it a great cast of well known faces, from the Oscar nominated Imelda Staunton to Gavin & Stacy star Mathew Horne. The classic play returns to the West End, the birthplace of the story in 1964, where Joe Orton’s comedy opened to a world of controversy by highlighting an obsession with sex and hypocrisy in 1960s Britain.
The show opened at the New Arts Theatre in May 1964 and transferred to the Wyndham’s Theatre the same year, since when it has enjoyed productions all over the world. Entertaining Mr Sloane is the story of Mr Sloane (Horne). He is a charming young man who manages to find his way into a middle class household as a lodger, where Kath (Staunton) lives with her brother Ed.
It is 1960s London and Kath is a lonely woman who is seeking love, so when Staunton arrives she sets her sights on him, competing with her brother for his attention, with dark secrets, blackmail, murder and all kinds of sexual games in the mix. The play is a story about infatuation as the siblings fight over the tenant with the dark history.
Sloane is played by Mathew Horne, who has appeared in many programmes for television including The Catherine Tate Show, Roman’s Empire and of course opposite James Corden in the popular Gavin & Stacy. In 2009, he will star in the movie Lesbian Vampire Killers as well as working on a new BBC sketch show which is going to be co-written and directed by Kathy Burke. Burke herself is acting as ‘creative associate’ on the play, which will mark Horne’s West End debut.
Kath is played by Imelda Staunton , the Oscar nominated and Olivier Award winning actress who has had success starring in many films including Mike Leigh’s Vera Drake. Onstage she has appeared in There Came A Gypsy Riding by Frank McGuinness, Guys And Dolls both in 1982 and 1996, A Chorus Of Disapproval (for which she won an Olivier Award) and The Corn In Green (for which she also won an Olivier Award). She has also appeared in various productions at the National Theatre such as Life x3 by Yasmina Reza, The Beggar’s Opera and Brecht’s Shweyk In The Second World War.
Entertaining Mr Sloane is at the Trafalgar Studios from Thursday 22nd January 2009 to Saturday 11th April 2009.
