Three Days Of Rain looks at the private worlds of one generation and how they are reinterpreted by the next. McAvoy plays Walker Janeway, who finds himself reunited with his sister Nan as they gather for the reading of their father’s will. Their father Ned (also played by McAvoy) was a wealthy and successful architect who left his legacy behind in the form of his 1960s New York house designed with his late business partner Theo (Harman).
The pair are joined by Theo’s son (played again by Harman) and so the three childhood friends have to settle the estate and determine the future of the house. The discovery of a brief entry, 'three days of rain', in Ned’s diary is the only clue to the true stories of the previous generation. The play is clever in its dealing with the two generations, with both McAvoy and Harman taking on the dual roles of fathers and sons.
McAvoy is a rising star in both Hollywood and in British cinema. This year he cemented his status in the critically acclaimed movie Wanted alongside Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman. The BAFTA Award winner’s other film credits include Atonement, The Last King Of Scotland, The Chronicles Of Narnia, Bright Young Things and Becoming Jane. On television his credits have included appearances in hit shows such as State Of Play and Shameless. He has many years of experience acting on stage and it includes the Royal Court’s Breathing Corpses in 2005, Hampstead’s Out In The Open and Privates On Parade at the Donmar Warehouse in 2001 in which he also appeared onstage with Nigel Harman. Three Days Of Rain is a welcome return for McAvoy.
Nigel Harman is best known for his role as Dennis Rickman in the BBC soap Eastenders. Since then he has appeared onstage in the Tricycle’s The Caretaker, Guys and Dolls at the Picadilly Theatre, The Common Pursuit at the Menier Chocolate Factory and of course the mentioned Privates On Parade at the Donmar Warehouse. His other television credits include Tenko in the eighties and more recently Lark Rise To Candleford as well as The Outsiders with Colin Salmon and Brian Cox.
Directing Three Days Of Rain is Jamie Lloyd, whose previous credits include The Lover & The Collection at the Comedy Theatre and the more recent Piaf at the Vaudeville Theatre (previously at the Donmar Warehouse). He directs Three Days Of Rain from Richard Greenberg’s script. The American playwright is behind the likes of Take Me Out, Night Ande Her Stars, The Author’s Voice, The Bloodletters and The American Plan.
