Synopsis

The Duke of York’s Theatre will be housing A View From The Bridge in 2009, with Ken Stott leading the cast on the London stage. The Arthur Miller play opens in February 2009 under the direction of Lindsay Posner. This is the first time the play has been shown in the West End since 1995’s production with Bernard Hill and Joseph Fiennes. This new version of A View From The Bridge also stars Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio.

The story follows the character of longshoreman Eddie Carbone (Stott), raising the orphaned niece of his wife. He begins to harvest inappropriate sexual feelings towards Catherine, which causes great trauma in his life. He must hide his emotions and find a way to control them or else he will spiral even further into self-destruction. No stranger to writing about controversial subjects, Arthur Miller wrote the play which Lord Chamberlain initially banned due to its references to incest. As a result the show had to appear in private clubs. The play had been given its world premiere on Broadway in 1955 before appearing in the West end in 1956 with Anthony Quayle in the starring role. Mastrantonio will play the wife of Ken Stott’s Eddie Carbone, as they raise their orphaned niece Catherine.

Other great actors have appeared in previous incarnations of the production including Michael Gambon in 1987 amongst others. Gambon himself is currently appearing in No Man’s Land alongside David Walliams, also at the Duke of York’s Theatre.

Ken Stott’s previous credits include an appearance at the National Theatre, with a role in Art - the long lasting comedy which also starred Albert Finnet. He has also appeared in Heroes and God of Carnage more recently. He is a well known actor, famous for appearing on both television and film, with TV credits including Rebus and Messiah whilst his film credits include Danny Boyle’s Shallow Grave and the Tom Hanks vehicle Charlie Wilson’s War. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio’s most recent London show was Grand Hotel in 2004, where it was housed at the Donmar Warehouse.

Director Lindsay Posner’s other credits include Carousel (opening this November), Fiddler On The Roof, A Life In The Theatre, Oleanna and Fool For Love. Posner has directed Stott before in the Young Vic production of The Misanthrope.

A View From The Bridge is at The Duke Of York’s Theatre from Thursday 5th February 2009 (previews from Saturday 24th January 2009) until Saturday 16th May 2009.
