Synopsis

The Old Vic will be the home of Complicit in January as the theatre’s slate of new productions gets in swing. The Artistic Director Kevin Spacey will helm the show, which is the world premiere of Joe Sutton’s play starring Richard Dreyfuss.

Complicit tells the story of Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Ben Kritzer (Dreyfuss) as the current political climate is explored. Kritzer is hauled in front of the Supreme Court where he has to face a dilemma: defend his belief in freedom of press, or protect his family. The American play shows us what happens when Kritzer’s liberties are stripped away and he begins to question whether you can ever truly know what is being perpetrated in your family name.

Richard Dreyfuss is best known for his role in the blockbuster Steven Spielberg movie Jaws. He was most recently seen in London back in 1999 in The Prisoner Of Second Avenue when it appeared at the Theatre Royal. He is well known for being axed as Max Bialystock in Mel Brooks’ London version of The Producers in 2004. As a result, Nathan Lane, who played Bialystock in the Broadway production, continued with the role. On Broadway, Dreyfuss has credits that include 1969’s But, Seriously…, 1983’s Total Abandon, Death And The Maiden and more recently 2004’s Sly Fox. His other film credits include playing Dick Cheney in Oliver Stones bio-pic about President Bush entitled W.

Speaking of taking on the role, Dreyfuss said “There is no greater place to be human than in front of humans. No greater way to reflect being human. No greater place than The Old Vic.”

Writer Joe Sutton is a prize winning playwright who has previously written As It Is In Heaven, The Benefits Of Doubt, Voire ire and Black Market. He has also taught playwrighting for many years.

Kevin Spacey was announced as the Artistic Director of the Old Vic in 2003. He is a famous actor well known for appearing in theatre, television and film. He has appeared in The Usual Suspects (winning an Academy Award), Se7en and American Beauty. His career started in the 1980s and has brought him wide acclaim from critics and movie fans alike. Onstage Spacey has starred in the title role of Trevor Nunn’s Richard II and also starred in Eugene O’Neill’s A Moon for the Misbegotten, both at the Old Vic. Complicit will be his first directing job since 2004’s Cloaca.

Complicit is at the Old Vic from Thursday 22nd January 2009 to Saturday 21st February 2009.
