Synopsis

Horrid Henry – Live And Horrid

The Trafalgar Studios will be the home of Horrid Henry – Live And Horrid this November with Francesca Simon’s popular character from the series of children’s books being adapted by Jon Godber. The character, who has appeared in both books and on television, has been entertaining children since the early nineties.

Meet Henry, he is a trouble making, mischievous little boy, constantly carrying out practical jokes and terrorising a number of people. His victims include his parents, his teacher Miss Battle-Axe, his brother Perfect Pete, his smelly baby brother and of course anyone who takes his fancy. In the world of Horrid Henry there are also other colourful characters such as Rude Ralph, his best friend and Moody Margaret, his nemesis. The adaptation of the licence appears amidst songs, music and dance numbers.

Francesca Simon started writing the books of Horrid Henry in 1993, which have gone on to achieve monumental success with 12 million books being sold in the UK alone. It has since been published in twenty five languages and twenty seven different countries around the globe; making Henry one of the most famous children’s literary characters in the United Kingdom (a certain boy wizard is possibly his only competition).

It was inevitable that he would leap from the pages of his books to our television screens and in 2006 he made his transfer to CITV as an animated feature. This incarnation managed to garner record breaking viewing figures itself with fifty two episodes in the bag and a further fifty two on the way next year. Producing the show is Novel Entertainment.

Adapted the books for the stage is Jon Godber, whose previous credits include Blood, Sweat and Tears, Teechers, Up ‘N’ Under and Bouncers. This makes Horrid Henry – Live and Horrid his first venture into family theatre.

Directing is Hannah Chissick, who is currently the Artistic Director of Harrogate Theatre. For that theatre her credits have included directing Ain’t Misbehavin, Ghosts, and Steaming. In London’s Theatreland she has worked on Side By Side By Sondheim (The Venue) and Boeing Boeing (Comedy). The show is designed by Pip Leckenby with lighting by Richard G Jones and music by Lester Barnes (who also worked on the music for the television show). It is a Watershed production that is produce by Michael Edwards and Carole Winbter for the West End, in association with Novel Entertainment (like the show) and Sheffield Theatres.

Horrid Henry – Live and Horrid is at the Trafalgar Studios 1 from Friday 21st November 2008 to Sunday 11th January 2009.
