The 1964 movie with Dick Van Dyke was a cultural landmark that is treated with respect with this new version. The Mary Poppins motion picture has been reintroduced into the world with the new live stage musical based on the Disney classic. Director Cameron Mackintosh was able to capture the stage rights to the Mary Poppins phenomenon after a twenty five year struggle and it is safe to say that the production rest in trustworthy hands. Sir Cameron is a critically acclaimed and influential producer with a solid track history of theatrical productions. It was perhaps inevitable then, that he would get hold of the rights and after a meeting with Mary Poppin’s creator Pamela Travers, a deal was made in 1993. As such, the new Musical is presented by the Disney Corporation in association with Cameron Mackintosh Ltd, as a joint venture. This new version will bring both world of the novel and film together, with Pamela Travers’ book and the movie’s characters appearing together.
Fast forward from 1993 to 2001. This was when the started to properly lift off as Tom Schumacher, Disney’s Theatrical Director, arrived in the nation’s capital to talk with Mackintosh and soon enough the show began to take shape.
The new show features familiar songs by The Sherman Brothers (Richard M Sherman and Robert B Sherman) such as Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, Feed the Birds and Chim Chim Cher-ee, and also features new songs by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe with brand new melodies and lyrics. Writing the stage show is Julian Fellowes, the Oscar winning screenwriter. So sit back and enjoy the classic tale of the British Nanny as she takes you on a charming tale full of songs and adventure.
After huge success in London’s West End and Broadway, the Cardiff showing is sure to be a must see event, with the Wales Millennium Centre providing a magnificent venue. Management at the venue is thrilled to be hosting the event that they say is going to appeal to their audiences. There’s only one way to find out!
