Rue Magique, the musical from lyricist Brett Kahr, lands at the King’s Head Theatre this October and will open audience’s eyes through the winter months. The likes of Melanie La Barrie and Terel Nugent will appear onstage in a powerful story of a South London prostitute and her thirteen year old daughter. It will force the viewer to face head on the realities of the lives of people who exist out of sight of the police and the rest of society and simply struggle to make amends. It will challenge our views of a woman we must have hope for whilst she drags her own daughter through a shady underworld. ThisIsLondon calls it “a daring production”. Translating as Street Magic in Creole, Rue Magique is a powerful play that cannot be missed.
Melanie La Barrie (Les Miserables, Mary Poppins) plays Desdemona the woman at the centre of the piece. Accompanying her is her daughter Sugar, played by Nadia Di Mambro. Described as a moving rite of passage story, Rue Magique follows these two characters as they struggle to live in a world of prostitution, surviving by any necessary means. Joining the actors are Terel Nugent as Rem, Gavin Ashbarry, Adam Bayjou, Julian Forsyth, Amanda Minihan, Amanda Posener and Anna Stolli.
Brett Kahr originally wrote the piece as a short musical which was written in light of the struggles of young people in a London charity, The Kids Company. In 1999 it was performed in front of the Prince of Wales. After collaborating with Lisa Forrell, the piece has since been developed so that it is now a two-act, full length musical with Forrell directing and Kahr handling the music.
Joining Kahr and Forrell is a crew that consists of Damian Jackson as choreographer, Polly Sullivan as designer, Natasha Ward in charge of costume, Tim Mascall in charge of lighting, David White as musical supervisor and Andy Massey as the musical director.
ThisIsLondon points to the success of Into the Hoods as evidence that this kind of ‘edgy’ drama can work and that London audiences will appreciate the piece.
