Synopsis

Enjoy is an age old classic by Alan Bennett and will be running at the Gielgud Theatre from January 2009. Starring Alison Steadman and David Troughton, the play is set in Bennett’s home town of Leeds and concerns the lives of Wilf and Connie as their lives are turned upside down by a series of events including the demolition of their home and the sudden arrival of a sociologist. This dark comedy has been describes as great by critics. The Sunday Times says “'The writing is brilliant. Alison Steadman and David Troughton [give] masterful comic performances”. The Telegraph calls it “Cryingly funny,” referring to it as “Christopher Luscombe's pitch-perfect revival [with] Blissfully funny jokes. Alison Steadman [is] wonderfully funny. Beautifully acted”. The Mail on Sunday adds to the praise: “Alison Steadman...fabulous. David Troughton...marvellous. Josie Walker...superb, Carol Macready...glorious. Explosively funny. The audience were begging for mercy”.

Wilf and Connie are an aging couple living in Leeds’ last back-to-back. With the demolition of the area currently in progress it transpires that they are to be re-housed in a much better place – a masionette with waste disposal and vinyl flooring. Soon enough a sociologist arrives, hoping to observe them in their normal, daily routine and this chain of events takes their lives to a whole new level. With fifteen characters throughout the play, each extraordinary in their own right, Enjoy is a play you must, well, enjoy!

Alan Bennett is acclaimed to the extent that he is a household name, and has been so for over forty years. His other credits include The History Boys (which is celebrated as a theatrical sensation), Habeas Corpus, Forty Years On, Single Spies, The Madness of George III, Talking Heads and The Lady in the Van. He is often proclaimed as one of Britain’s greatest playwrights and has a keen eye for the English way of living.

Alison Steadman is an award winning actress whose previous credits include Abigail’s Party by Mike Leigh (to whom she was married until 2001), The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof all in various theatres across the country. David Troughton (son of Doctor Who star Patrick Toughton) is an actor well known for this Shakespearean roles including Richard III for the Royal Shakespeare Society for which he has played King Richard and Bolingbroke in separate productions. Both of these actors bring the characters of Wilf and Connie to life.

Enjoy is running at the Gielgud Theatre from Tuesday 27th January 2009 until Saturday 2nd May 2009.
