Latest Review: "Disappointing adaption of a classic story let down by uninspiring set design, unengaging characte..."
Haymarket Royal Theatre in London will be the setting for Ken Ludwig’s new adaptation of Treasure Island, the Robert Louis Stevenson classic adventure story about pirates and buried gold. It is a coming of age story that in this guise stars Keith Allen as the swashbuckling pirate Long John Silver. Treasure Island is a well known story full of action, great characters and a brilliant atmosphere. You will enter Haymarket Royal as an audience member, but you will leave wanting to sail the seven seas.
Stevenson’s story concerns that of a young cabin boy called Jim Hawkins. He travels across the ocean with a motley crew on search of secret pirate treasures. They are forced to face the deadly and ruthless Long John Silver, the legendary pirate also in search of treasure. Jim must battle against the pirate to claim the treasure – with both his fortunes and his own life at stake. Based on the book from 1883, Treasure Islandis one of the most famous and most dramatised stories of all time. Its influence is seen everywhere, popularising various different concepts concerning pirates throughout culture and society – ‘x’ marks the spot being one of them, along with concepts of one-legged pirates with peg legs and pirates on their shoulders and the idea of tropical islands being included. The story actually made its first appearance serialised in 1881-1882 in Young Folks magazine under the titles of The Sea Cook, or Treasure Island.
Star Keith Allen was recently seen onscreen as Sheriff Vaysey of Nottingham in the recent BBC series Robin Hood. He has starred in films such as 24-Hour Party People, Twin Town, Trainspotting, Shallow Grave, Scandal and Supergrass. Onstage, he has appeared in The Celebration by Harold Pinter, The Room at the Almeida Theatre and The Royal National Theatre’s The Homecoming. The play is directed by Sean Holmes, who is known for directing as part of seasons at the RSC, The National Theatre, The Chichester Festival Theatre and the Oxford Stage Company. Kevin Ludwig has adapted the play from Stevenson’s novel. The show is designed by Lizzie Clachan, with lighting by Paul Anderson. Sound is by Emma Laxton with music by Tom Haines and Ross Hughes. The producers are Brian Eastman and Andrew Welch.
Treasure Island appears at the Haymarket Royal Theatre from Friday 7th November 2008 to Saturday 28th February 2009.
