After winning high acclaim on Broadway and winning countless awards, August Osage County transfers to London’s Lyttelton Theatre in the West End for its UK premiere. The internationally renowned Steppenwolf Company brings us a story of the Midwester American Family being turned upside down in a production the New York Times calls ‘The most exciting new American play Broadway has seen for years’. The Daily News says ‘Tracy Letts [Author] lets fly so many original and diabolically funny ideas that he reinvigorates the family drama and brings it up to date’.
The play concerns the Weston Family as an unexpected reunion takes place in Oklahoma (the title of the show is a reference to Osage County, Oklahoma). After the disappearance of their father the home is turned upside down when secrets, repressed memories and truths burst out and turns the Midwestern American Family inside-out. This brings up various issues during the play, including drug abuse, alcoholism, suicide, death, aging, family dysfunction and of course love; all across 3 acts. This is overseen by Violet, the pill-popping and acidic matriarch.
Its transfer to London’s Lyttelton Theatre is welcomed following its successful run in the United States. Whilst there it won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play as well as the Drama Desk Award. It also managed the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award and the Outer Critics’ Circle Award. Other awards included Best Leading and Best Featured Actress in a Play for the actors Deanna Dunagan (as Violet) and Rondi Reed, both of whom return in the UK stage transition. Other performers include Ian Barford, Gary Cole and Kimberley Guerrero.
Directed by Anna D. Shapiro, August Osage County is designed by Todd Rosenthal with costume design by Ana Kiuzmanic. David Singer provides the music with the sound designed by Richard Woodbury. Shapiro and Rosenthal have both won Tony Awards for their participation in the project. Author of the show Tracy Letts’ previous credits include Bug and Killer Joe, which both appeared in the 1990s at London’s Bush Theatre. Later this month, his new play Superior Donuts will premiere in Chicago, sure to be another renowned production from the Steppenwolf Company.
August Osage County is showing at Lyttelton Theatre in London from November 26th 2008 (Previews from 21st November) to 21st January 2009.
