A new version of the famous ballet Manon is being given its UK premiere by English National Ballet this year in 2008, performed by the English National Ballet’s 67 dancers and symphony orchestra. This version premiered at the Royal Danish Ballet in 2003 and is a world class rendition of Kenneth MacMillan’s masterpiece. This ballet shows the world of the 18th century, showcasing the tribulations of a young Parisian girl with set pieces in Paris and New Orleans.
A three-act ballet, Manon (or L'histoire de Manon) tells the story of a young girl (Manon) who is in love with two men – one the student Des Grieux guaranteeing her true love, the other a rich man guaranteeing her wealth and comfort. This is a tragic love affair, perfectly designed to be showcased by Macmillan’s magnificent dances. The roles of Manon and Des Grieux will show off the skills of young and upcoming stars of The Royal Ballet, which will add an extra delight at seeing the stars of the future. Kenneth MacMillan’s masterpiece will also display the world of the 18th century, with various beautiful settings, including a bustling courtyard perfect for the meeting of the young couple and a Parisian house of courtesans. This tale of love and despair as Manon struggles to make up her mind contains tragic consequences and is the perfect way to experience some of the world’s best dances.
The piece is based on the novel L’histoire du chevalier des Grieux et de Man Lescaut by Antoine François Prévost, published in 1731 to much scandal because of its controversial themes and content. However, it was still popular enough through pirated copies, that is remains well known to this day and has inspired this ballet.
Originally created for The Royal Ballet in 1974, the famous Manon is now also part of the classical ballet worldwide, hence this rendition’s origins in the Royal Danish Ballet. It is arguably Kenneth MacMillan’s greatest work, with the character of Manon a memorable young, beautiful girl. The work comprises the music of Jules Massenet and is partially orchestrated by Leighton Lucas.
Performances will take place in the West End at London’s Coliseum on St Martin’s Lane from 2nd January 2009 to 11th January 2009. This is ballet at its finest.
