Lloyd Newson’s DV8 Physical Theatre brings you To Be Straight With You, is a hard hitting piece of theatre which aims to explore intolerance in a society deemed equal, looking at issues of religion and sexuality. As an innovative piece of theatre, that play also includes dance, text, documentary, animated projections and film. The Times calls is ‘Stirring…startling…strikingly sustained’ whilst the Guardian praises artistic director Lloyd Newson, ‘[he has] always been well ahead of the game. Now just at a point when others are catching up, Newson reinvents the rules… Hard-hitting and passionate…you will not be able to resist this brave, life-affirming show.’
The show, described as poetic it deals with sexuality and the intolerance displayed towards it – how in a society that is supposed to be tolerant, intolerance is still inflicted towards minorities, including the gay community. Lloyd Newson and co. interview various members of communities to see how intolerance manifests itself, discovering a world where people are forced to hide their sexuality or else face physical abuse. This all takes place in a world where new laws have been introduced to try and protect gay couples in the UK. Religious beliefs have played a part in this, and Newson points out how people often use religious texts to justify ‘negativity’ towards homosexuality. As a result, Newson hopes to spread awareness of the issues and will do so with a limited run of To Be Straight With You at the Lyttelton Theatre from October 29th 2008 to November 15th 2008.
The DV8 Theatre is acclaimed for its innovation, having won sixteen awards over three years for its stage and film productions. It has won a Prix Italia and the Rose D’Or. The Lyttelton was previously used to house its 2005 production Just For Show.
