in-i is an exciting new project created by Akram Khan and actress Juliette Binoche. A piece of dance theatre which asks ‘If the Greeks had 14 words to describe different ways of loving, how many dare we experience?’
Set in a cinema, Binoche plays a teenage girl fantasising about a man sitting nearby played by Akram Kahn. Throughout we are treated to dances and soliloquies that will dazzle and delight.
Juliette Binoche as an actress has had a brilliant career with excellent artistic choices including work with directors such as Louis Malle (Damage) and Michael Haneke (Hidden). She is also well known for starring in films such as The English Patient and Chocolat. Meanwhile, Kahn has had an extensive background of inter-disciplinary dance pieces, including performances with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Antony Gormley and Nitin Sawhney (zero degrees), Sylvie Guillem (Sacred Monsters) and Hanif Kureishi.
Playing in Lyttleton Theatre, in-i is a tale of love, romance and obsession from artist Anish Kapoor, who will create the surroundings for the piece following success at winning the Turner Prize. As a result, what we have here is a collaboration that is unique and gives us a chance to marvel at the results of putting together three of today’s most exciting artists. They will dance and delight with performances designed to portray love and longing in a way only the best artists can do. They’re performance is top notch and the tale strong, with the chemistry on top form.
Judith Mackrell, writing in The Guardian says ‘There is no question that Khan and Binoche are fascinating together as they venture into new terrain’.
So see in-i at Lyttleton theatre, staying until October, you won’t want to miss out.
