Eurobeat – Almost Eurovision is a musical spoof of the Eurovision Song Contest, a brilliantly funny homage which promises to keep you entertained all through the night and all of it is live on stage! It is likely to be one of the funniest shows you’ll ever see and that’s not all – this show lets you decide the outcome yourself; just like the real Eurovision, you the audience gets to vote for the winner!
The premise is simple. We are introduced to a Sarajevo TV station where a take-off of the real competition unfolds in front of our eyes. During the first half of the show 10 countries perform their songs and then the rest is in audience’s hands. One the way in you’ll be given a badge with your assigned country and then you vote (via text) for your top three performances (except your own country of course). In the next half the votes are reported back to you just like Eurovision as different countries’ correspondents report back to the stage via ‘satellite’. We get glimpses of the ‘greenroom’ and witness the hilarious antics as the contestants wait in agony for the result. Finally, the winner is announced and just like the real thing, the end result is a colourful display.
The musical pays close attention to detail, with the Eurovision Song Contest pinned down hilariously, even down to the presenters. We are introduced to the hosts Sergei (played here by star Les Dennis) and Boyka (Mel Giedrvc), both wanting the limelight all to themselves. This is guaranteed to be the funniest and best night out you will ever have!
Directed by Glynn Nicholas and written by Craig Christie and Andrew Patterson, the show opened on September 9th at the Novello Theatre to great reviews. Alice Jones in the Independent found it hilarious: ‘I can’t remember laughing this much (or ever making quite so much noise) in a theatre’. The Times calls it ‘Slick…Instantly wonderfully funny’, giving it 4 stars, whilst Metro gives it a mighty 5 star review.
