Synopsis

As part of the Donmar Warehouse season, The Wyndham’s Theatre is presenting Ivanov with Kenneth Branagh. Chekhov’s explosive play is brought to life as Russia appears onstage on the brink of change. The Evening Standard calls it ‘A near revolutionary, powerfully acted production of Anton Chekhov’s early tragicomedy.’ Of Kenneth Branagh, the Daily Mail says ‘Astonishing. Performance of the year? Without a doubt’. The Independent adds ‘Everything is spot on. This is a must see.’ Michael Gandage directs this version from Tom Stoppard.

Ivanov (Branagh) is a man of limitless promise and great hope. This changes when he spirals into debt. As a result his marriage is in crisis and he is forced to spend his evenings avoiding love affairs and negotiating loans, trying desperately to get out of debt. This is not helped by jealousies and intrigues that blossom in a small town, which begin to take a toll on his life. Ivanov is a man who is engulfed with self-doubt and despair, struggling to get back on with his life whilst in the background, Russia itself is standing on the brink of revolution.

Originally performed in 1887, the play was initially commissioned in Moscow as a comedy; Checkhov wrote a four-act tragedy instead. This version was not as successful as hoped and Chekhov got to work rewriting it, meaning the version we see today is not the same as the one originally conceived and has been labelled as a ‘tragicomedy’. It is now one of Chekhov’s masterpieces.

As well as Branagh, this version’s cast includes John Atterbury, Jonathon Battersby, Lucy Briers, Lindia Broughton, Lorcan Cranitch, Ian Drysdale, GiovannaFalcone, Tom Hiddleston, Sylvestra Le Touzel,Gina McKee, Kevin RMcNally, Malcolm Ridley, Andrea Riseborough, Malcolm SinclairandJames Tucker. Written by the famous Anton Chekhov, whose other credits include Three Sisters, this brilliant cast will take an audience back to a changing Russia.

The Donmar Warehouse, who is working with the Wyndham Theatre to bring you this season, is a non-profit theatre company who operate in Covent Garden. They have an excellent reputation for bringing talent and expertise to the West End theatres for the past 15 years.

As well as Ivanov with Kenneth Branagh, the Donmar Warehouse season also includes Yukio Mishima’s play Madame de Sade with Judi Dench, Twelth Night by William Shakespeare with Derek Jacobi and also Shakespeare’s Hamlet, directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Jude Law as the prince himself.
