The Nutcracker, the English National Ballet’s magical show, is a must-see event this Christmas. Brought to you by Gerald Scarfe and Christopher Hampson, this is an eccentric family treat with spellbinding performances. Although the cast is yet to be announced (this will happen closer to the event) you can be sure that the performers will give it their best in this Tchaikovsky classic, made famous by the song ‘The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy’ and other familiars. This show is favourite amongst theatre-goers, having been performed in London for 55 years.
Meet Clara, the hero of the piece. She receives a Nutcracker doll as a Christmas present from the magician Dr Drosselmeyer. That night, as Clara wakes up and searches for her new present, the clock strikes 12, bringing with it giant mice that begin to fight with her brother’s toy soldiers. Soon enough the Nutcracker itself is brought to life and joins in the battle. After Clara battles the Mouse King, killing it with her show, the Nutcracker transforms into a handsome prince and together they visit the land of snow and The Kingdom of Sweet and The Palace of the Sugar Plum Fairy, finally falling in love with the prince.
The designs for this production are being carried out by cartoonist Gerald Scarfe, who brings to the mix a wonderful array of eccentric, larger than life designs, sets and characters. He brings wonderful inventions to the already established universe including modern soldiers parachuting in during the toy soldier fight and a unique method of transportation for Clara and the prince.
Choreography comes from Christopher Hampson, who brings to life everyone’s favourite dances originally mapped out by Lev Ivanov in 1892. This is the last chance to see this version of the play, so make sure it’s Christmas treat!
“This Nutcracker…is just the ticket” – The Times.
“greatly enhances by Hampson’s choreography for the national dances, amongst which the Arabian dance is truly stunning.” – LondonDance.com
“A visually thrilling experience… The costumes and sets are lavish, stylish in a Willy Wonka way, and the whole atmosphere is delightful” – The Times.
“An unusually jolly Nutcracker…if asked for a one-word summing up, it would have to be ‘fun’.” – The Stage.
