“The Glass Menagerie”, regarded as an important autobiographical play, by Tennessee Williams opens its doors at the Young Vic in November 2010 with a team of acclaimed actors taking to the stage and with it the promise of some compelling performances. It will not only be a chance to witness one of the best known dramas from the famous American writer, but a chance to step through the foyer of a venue that first opened its doors forty years ago in 1970. As a result it is likely that theatre tickets will be in high demand to witness the acclaimed “The Glass Menagerie” this Christmas season.
Deborah Findlay is one of the cast members appearing in the production. She is a Laurence Olivier Award-winning performer who won great acclaimed for her appearance in “Stanley” at the National Theatre in the 1990s and more recently turned heads in “Madame de Sade” alongside Judi Dench at Wyndham’s Theatre (as part of the Donmar West End season). She has also carved out a career on the screen with appearances in the likes of “Cranford”, “Vincent River” and “Foyle’s War”, amongst others, making her a sought-after actress.
And she will certainly be put to the test with “The Glass Menagerie”, which is said to be an autobiographical play from Williams, with the down-on-his-luck Tom taking centre stage in the plot (Williams’ real name was Thomas Lanier Williams). Other characters from Williams’ life are mirrored in the production as Tom attempts to support his overbearing mother by working in a warehouse, whilst his sister – an obsessive and mentally ill woman – struggled with a crippled foot. The play was penned in 1940s and first appeared in front of audiences in 1944 when it premiered in Chicago.
Other cast members appearing in the production include Sinead Matthews, Leo Bill and Kyle Soller. Matthews, like Findlay, has appeared in stage production and onscreen, with credits to her name that include “Our Class” at the National Theatre. For the screen she has appeared in the Richard Curtis movie “The Boat that Rocked” and the likes of “Vera Drake” and “Pride and Prejudice”, with various television roles to her name as well.
Plays like “An Ideal Husband” are also running during the Christmas season in the capital, in addition to the usual family favourites across the West End. It makes the London theatre scene a great place to be over the winter months.
And “The Glass Menagerie” is just one part of this as it runs at the Young Vic from Wednesday 17th November 2010 (previews from Thursday 11th November 2010) to Saturday 1st January 2011.
