Synopsis

The Peacock Theatre in London will host The Snowman this Christmas. Raymond Briggs’ widely acclaimed and adored book will appear onstage for its tenth anniversary where it will delight children all over again and bring a smile to the faces of all those that see it. Most of us remember the 1980s film adaptation of the book, which captured the hearts of the nation and introduced us all to young Aled Jones, singer of the timeless Walking in the Air. The Times says that the current stage show is “Sheer theatrical magic. Go see The Snowman, and melt”, whilst Time Out calls it “An essential part of London’s Christmas calendar”. So go and see the Snowman this Christmas and let it change the way you view Snowmen forever.

Set at Christmas Eve, the story tells of a young boy called James who builds a snowman. That night his sleep is restless and he decides to go outside and take another look at his creation. To his amazement he finds that the snowman has come to life, taking him on a night time adventure through the skies of the world, visiting penguins dancing away, reindeer, more snowmen and inevitably and much to the envy of every child watching, Father Christmas. Then let us not forget the dramatic face to face with Jack Frost, the evil villain of the story.

Children will be amazed at the spectacle in front of them as James and the Snowman literally fly through the night sky and over a stage in front of you. This mixture of dance music and world class stage craftsmanship is suitable for all children above the age of two and it great way to introduce children to dance at the West End.

The story was first created in 1978 when Raymond Briggs wrote the famous book. Then in 1982 Howard Blake wrote the song ‘Walking in the Air’, which became synonymous with the story as it appeared within the film version and provided the only words to appear all the way through the motion picture. Originally the song was sung by choirboy Peter Auty, but later Aled Jones sung it for a 1985 ad campaign once Auty’s voice had broken. As a result it launched the career of Jones when the song went to number 3 in the UK charts.

The Snowman appears at the Peacock Theatre from Wednesday 3rd December 2008 until Sunday 11th January 2009.
