This Christmas sees the Charles Dickens classic “A Christmas Carol” take to the stage once more, this time at the Arts Theatre in London, with Susie McKenna leading proceedings and with actors Simon Lipkin, Rebecca Thornhill and Michael Matus appearing alongside comedian Gareth Hale.
The story of the nineteenth century’s miserable character of Scrooge finding some well needed Christmas spirit is turned upside down in the production as we are introduced to a brand new Christmas-hating character in the form of Sidney who, along with his nephew Denny, accidentally finds himself locked inside a theatre.
The next thing they know a highly expectant audience is eagerly awaiting a performance of “A Christmas Carol”, leaving it up to them, along with some out of work actors, a mouse with stage fright and the theatre’s resident cat, to put on the show. So the unexpected team get together and try their best, but how on Earth is this unlikely team ever going to stage a successful production of this piece of classic literature?
Playing Scrooge in the production is Gareth Hale, who is well known to audiences as one half of the comedy duo that is Hale & Pace (alongside Norman Pace). Together they won many admirers with their comedy programmes such as “Hale & Pace”, “The Saturday Gang”, “Jobs For The Boys”, “The Management” and “Pushing Up Daisies”. On his own, Hale has also appeared in the likes of “Family Affairs” (Channel 5’s former soap) and “The Royal” (ITV’s spin-off from “Heartbeat”). Meanwhile, he has also appeared in a range of theatre productions such as Trevor Nunn’s “My Fair Lady” and John Godber’s “Bouncers”, both of which toured the UK.
Susie McKenna arrives at the Arts Theatre to direct “A Christmas Carol” following many successful pantomimes she has directed for the Hackney Empire. As both a director and a performer, her credits include “Ragtime” and “Cats”, as well as “Chicago” at the Cambridge Theatre and “One Night Stand” at the King’s Head Theatre.
Meanwhile, music for the show is provided by Steve Edis, who is well known for the likes of “The Seagull” and “King Lear”, both of which were staged for the Royal Shakespeare Company. His other credits include “The Royal Hunt Of The Sun” for the National Theatre and “The Coast Of Utopia”.
“A Christmas Carol” makes its appearance at the Arts Theatre from Wednesday 25th November 2009 (previews from Wednesday 11th November 2009) to Sunday 10th January 2010.
