The show is Matthew Bourne’s dynamic interpretation of the famous Nutcracker story, which has to be one of the all time great Christmas tales.  Written by E.T.A. Hoffman, the book itself is called ‘The Nutcracker and the Mouse King’, and tells the magical story of a young girl’s toy which comes to life and takes her on a breathtaking adventure, finally battling and overcoming the Mouse King.

The story gained universal fame through the ballet that was developed from it, which was choreographer by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, debuting to the world in 1892.  However, the thing that really drove the show and embedded the story in the minds of the populace was the incredible score which Tchaikovsky provided for it.  Lyrical and romantic with all the characteristic melody that this composer is so famous for, it became an enduring hit.

Choreographer Matthew Bourne’s interpretation of this beautiful story is a delight to behold.  One of the most influential and respected talents in the British dance world, he has won a good deal of awards for his exceptional artistic work.  He won the Tony Awards and Drama Desk Awards for both the choreography and direction of ‘Swan Lake’, as well as such accolades as the Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance, and the Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience with his show ‘Edward Scissorhands’.
