Sadler’s Wells will be home to Edward Scissorhands in the West End this winter as the dance show based on the famous Tim Burton movie returns to London after sell out runs in New York, LA, San Francisco, Sydney, Melbourne and Paris. The film originally starred Johnny Depp in the titular role with support from Winona Ryder, Dianne Wiest and Anthony Michael Hall. This new version is adapted by Matthew Bourne, a highly respected choreographer in the world of dance, and is a treat for all the family to enjoy. The Daily Telegraph calls it “A fantastic family show! Full of brilliant comic detail and engaging life”. After opening in December, the show will be booking until Sunday 18th January 2009.
The story revolves around Edward. He is the creation of an inventor who has sadly died before his completion. As a result, he is left behind and must make his own way – the only problem being that he is unfinished and has scissors for hands. A family in the nearby town decide to take him in where he makes friends with Kim, the friendship of which is at the heart of the piece. Their relationship is framed with prejudice from the local community and the jealousy of Kim’s boyfriend Jim. As a result, Edward is forced to flee the town and has to take refuge in the mansion where he was created. Kim follows, realising that she has fallen for him, but conflict is never far away as her boyfriend Jim follows her intent on killing Edward and seeking his revenge.
The original film version of Edward Scissorhands was a critically acclaimed motion picture from director Tim Burton. It is often cited as his greatest movie and Burton adds to this by referring the film as his most personal pieces of work.
Matthew Bourne, who adapted the piece with the blessing of Burton, is a dance choreographer with an impressive CV. His highly respected work includes Overlap Lovers – An Intrigue In Three Parts (1987), Highland Fling (1994), the controversial but award winning Swan Lake (1995), Car Man (2000) and The Nutcracker (2002).
With Matthew Bourne presenting the play, design is by Lez Brotherson, lighting by Howard Harrison. Music is created by Terry Davies with inspiration from the original movie and its music by Danny Elfman. Edward Scissorhands is at Sadler’s Wells from Tuesday 2nd December 2008 until Sunday 18th Janurary 2009.
